Just six volunteers have reportedly joined a renewed search for missing British holidaymaker Jay Slater after an appeal for help from Spanish police.

The Guardia Civil in Tenerife had appealed for volunteer associations, such as firefighters and individual volunteers who were experts in rugged terrain, to help in a “busqueda masiva”, or massive search, which started on Saturday (June 29).

Despite the public appeal, only six volunteers turned up to help, according to the Mirror, with nearly 30 professional searchers from the local police, fire and mountain rescue services.

Asked about the underwhelming turnout, Cipriano Martin, head of the Civil Guard’s Greim mountain rescue unit, told the same publication: “Well, we’ve been searching for lots of days and with the search today, we’re talking about 30 people.”

Mr Slater, 19, and an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, is understood to have disappeared while trying to walk back from the village of Masca to his accommodation in Los Cristianos on June 17.
