British tourists in the Costa del Sol have been advised to dress properly while strolling through the streets of Malaga, as new fines are being introduced.

Malaga’s City Council has initiated a campaign with posters in English around the city, urging visitors to “dress completely”.

The posters feature an illustration of a man and woman in t-shirts, accompanied by the message: “Both on the street and in public places, always wear an upper garment for respect and hygiene.”

This message is also provided in Spanish at the bottom of the poster.

Targeted mainly at British tourists, who are the majority of foreign visitors in Spain, this campaign follows ongoing discontent from local anti-tourism groups.

They have expressed frustration that authorities are not sufficiently enforcing the rules against such behavior.

Under new regulations, visitors to Malaga city could face fines of up to €750 (£644.21) for walking around public places topless.

These laws, which have been in development since 2019, were officially enacted last September.

The Junta de Andalucia updated the “citizen coexistence” rules to enforce these measures, which were initially approved in December 2022.

Article 36 of the law prohibits being in public spaces while naked or wearing only underwear.

Additionally, it bans carrying inflatable sex dolls or wearing anything representing human genitalia, targeting mainly hen and stag parties.

Similarly last October, Sevilla introduced measures to curb “obscene” behavior, prohibiting wearing only underwear in public and clothing with sexist or xenophobic messages.
