This brainteaser is one of the most difficult to solve, and when shown on the Australian television quiz show, The 1% Club, viewers were left perplexed about what the answer could be.

According to the television show, only 15 percent of the world’s population will be able to solve the question.

Frustrated viewers have been going around in circles trying to work out what the right answer is.

The Australian show, which is based on the British programme bearing the same name, is hosted by Jim Jeffries. It asks questions of ‘logic and common sense’ to 100 quiz takers.

Starting with easy questions which 90 percent of the population could answer, the first round is a warm-up for the harder puzzles which contestants must try to work out.

The show then works up to nearly impossible questions which, it says, only 1 percent of the population will get right.

Contestants are on a timed clock and have only a limited amount of time to answer with hopes of winning the prize money. In Australia, the top prize is a staggering A$100,000 (£51,000) – but actually winning it is extremely hard.

Think you might be able to work out the answer?

It reads: “Frodo has forgotten his hotel room number. All he remembers is that it has at least one 9. If the hotel has room numbers from 1 to 100, how many might be Frodo’s?”

With only 30 seconds to answer, most viewers playing along at home admitted defeat. One TikTok user commenting a clip from the programme on the video-sharing social media platform said: “I didn’t say 9 because I assumed it had more than one number as it said at least one 9.”

Another user added: “Me confidently saying 10 and forgetting everything between 90 and 98.” A third user said: “I counted one more and got 20. I can’t focus with that guy.” One more user added: “I thought 1 because he only has 1 room.”

Sharing the answer, the host revealed it to be 19 – saying the possible room numbers are 9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89 and 90 through to 99.”
