Man arrested after burned remains found in California homeless encampment

SAN JOSE, Calif. (TCN) — A 39-year-old man is in custody after officials found the remains of a missing person at a homeless encampment.

According to the San Jose Police Department, on Aug. 19, an individual called authorities to report that they had found the burned remains of their missing relative. Officers responded to the scene in the area of Roberts Avenue and Vintage Way and determined the victim had died of homicidal violence.

Upon further investigation, officials identified Jesus Casas as the primary suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Three days after the discovery, on Aug. 22, police located Casas and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on a charge of murder. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office will positively identify the victim.

Police said the “motive and circumstances surrounding the event are still under investigation.”

In their news release, officers noted that this was the 21st suspected homicide in San Jose this year.
