A spokesperson has now confirmed that fingerprints examined in a post-mortem had confirmed that the remains were those of the missing teen.

Announcing the positive ID, The High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands said in a statement that the death “was caused by trauma consistent with a fall in a rocky area”.

Searchers also found documentation pointing to the body being Jay’s.

The teen, an apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire, disappeared after he went to a remote Airbnb near Masca with two men he met on the island, after partying with friends in Playa de las Americas.

Police said they spoke to the two men and determined they were “not relevant” to the case.

That morning, Jay spoke on the phone friends with pals Brad Hargreaves and Lucy Law, who were also on holiday with him, telling them he was “lost in the mountains”, “thirsty” and “had one percent battery” on his mobile phone.

Jay said was planning to walk to his holiday accommodation in the south of an island – a journey which would have taken him about 11 hours on foot.

He was reported missing shortly after when his phone died, prompting a major search by local law enforcement but it was called off in late June after it failed to produce any compelling leads.

However, authorities insisted the investigation into his disappearance would continue, and various volunteers stepped in to assist Jay’s heartbroken family as they continued their own efforts.

The teenager had flown out to Tenerife with friends on June 13, attending a music festival at Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas, on the south of the island three days later.

Following confirmation of his death on Tuesday, Lucy paid tribute to her friend, calling him “the happiest person in the room”.
