Jay’s friend Lucy Mae spoke to the Manchester Evening News, explaining that the young man had driven back to a friend’s flat on Sunday night without realising the distance, ending up stranded “in the middle of nowhere”.

The trek back on foot would take approximately 10 to 11 hours, and Monday’s temperatures soared into the high 20s.

On Wednesday at 12.30pm, the Civil Guard shifted their search to the southern tourist hotspots of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas following a reported sighting of Jay.

Later that day, the search operation was redirected back to the mountainous region after the supposed sighting in Los Cristianos turned out to be a dead end.
