Falkland Islands tensions have exploded once again as China threw its full support behind Argentina‘s claim over the archipelago.

Beijing’s Ambassador to Argentina, Wang Wei, issued last week a statement to Buenos Aires in which he expressed his support for closer relations between the two nations.

Wang’s move came as part of a meeting between a delegation of Chinese entrepreneurs visiting the Mendoza Municipality of Maipú.

Mayor Matías Stevanato welcomed the group, which included representatives of the energy, automotive and tech sectors.

Ambassador Wang signalled that “our embassy is here to serve you, and Chinese companies residing in Argentina have great technological capabilities to carry out various projects.”

He added: “We will continue to be in constant contact and our doors are open to all of you.

“In our country, we are working to open markets more and more.”

He hailed the growing cooperation opportunities between Beijing and Buenos Aires as he confirmed that “China ratifies Argentina’s sovereignty in the Malvinas.”

Argentinian President Javier Milei earlier this year reiterated Argentina’s claims over the Falkland Islands.

He said he expected the UK to agree to negotiations on the sovereignty of the British territory – a comment that prompted an immediate response from the British Government.
