Some Australian travellers will be able to apply for expedited access through United States customs and immigration from January next year.
The Global Entry program allows pre-authorised travellers to access faster immigration and customs channels at major US airports.
Global Entry holders will also get access to the Transportation Security Administration’s Pre-Check program which gives expedited screening processes for US domestic flights.
“Joining the Global Entry program is a mark of the closeness and the strength of the relationship between our two countries,” Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.
Citizens of 15 countries, including the United Kingdom, Singapore and South Korea, already have access to the Global Entry program.
Who can apply?
Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong announced on Tuesday that a limited number of Australians who travel most frequently to the US will be able to apply in January 2025.
About 1,000 Australians who have travelled to the US at least 5 times over the past 12 months will be granted expedited in the first instance, according to the Australian Financial Review.
An unlimited number of quick entries will be granted under the program’s second phase, which first requires the Australian federal parliament to pass legislation.
Applicants must undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview.
How much will it cost?
The US Homeland Security website lists the Global Entry program at US$100 ($153) and the TSA Pre-check program for US$77.95 ($119.25).
