Gas and oil pipelines are vital pieces of infrastructure – and sometimes politically contentious.
Natural resources are transported hundreds or even thousands of miles, sometimes spanning continents to reach their final destination.
Some of the best known pipelines include the Nordstream pipelines which run under the Baltic Sea and connect Russia to Germany and the Turkstream pipeline between Russia and Turkey.
However a major new gas pipeline is set to be created between two African countries.
Spanning an incredible 3,479 miles, the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline will connect the two nations, with some of the gas also being transported on to Europe.
The proposed route for the pipeline will take around the edge of West Africa, passing through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia and Senegal as it links the two nations.
The huge pipeline, which it is expected will be able to transport up to 10 billion cubic metres of gas from Nigeria every year, is set to cost around £19billion.
Topographical surveys are being carried out in some regions, however it is currently unclear when the pipeline will be completed.
In a speech in 2022, King Muhammed VI of Morocco emphasised how important he felt the pipeline was not just to Morocco but the entire region.
He said: “I want this to be a strategic project that benefits all of West Africa – a region which is home to more than 440 million people.
“This is a project for peace, for African economic integration and for co-development: a project for the present and for future generations.”
