STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (TCN) — A 50-year-old man was recently convicted of killing his girlfriend in 2021 in their home and hiding her body before fleeing with the victim’s credit cards, prescription drugs, and vehicle.

According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, a jury found Jason Ross guilty on Sept. 4 of the first-degree murder of his girlfriend, 47-year-old Kathleen Hales, as well as larceny from a building, unlawful driving away a motor vehicle, and stealing a financial transaction device without consent. Ross faces life without parole for the first-degree murder conviction alone and is set to be sentenced Oct. 10.

Prosecutors said that on July 24, 2021, Ross killed Hales in their residence by stabbing her numerous times and beating her with a hammer. Authorities eventually took him into custody in Prescott after he fled with one of the weapons used to kill his girlfriend, as well as the victim’s items.

In a statement, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said, “The medical examiner described the suffering endured by the victim as nothing short of torture. No one should have to endure that, especially at the hands of someone they trusted. We are grateful to the jury for delivering justice, and our thoughts remain with the victim’s family as they continue to deal with this tragic loss.”
