NEW YORK (TCN) — A 55-year-old man is in custody after a 31-year-old woman was found fatally shot and wrapped in a sleeping bag near a trash pile in Manhattan’s Kips Bay neighborhood last week.
According to WNBC-TV, on Friday, July 5, at around 5 p.m., New York Police Department officers responded to an address on East 27th Street after someone called to report a package outside the building had a foul odor. When officers arrived, they reportedly located the victim’s body on the sidewalk next to trash left out for pickup.
The victim, who had a gunshot wound to the head, has been identified as Yazmeen Williams.
Police reportedly obtained video showing someone in a wheelchair pulling the victim’s body down the street.
WCBS-TV reports on Monday, police arrested Chad Irish on a charge of concealment of a corpse, though he could face additional charges. He has previously been arrested for robbery and drug-related crimes.
However, chaos erupted when people mobbed Irish as he was brought out of his apartment building on a stretcher. Video shared by journalist Arthur Chi’en shows a large group attacking the suspect and pushing past officers as Irish is being rolled away.
Williams’ mother, Nicole Williams, told WCBS that her daughter was “looking so forward to living, living her life.” She earned a degree in criminal justice and had dreams of becoming a lawyer.
WPIX-TV reports Nicole Williams was in the crowd of people when Irish was taken into custody. She said, “He took a young beautiful girl, snuffed her out, took her life away from her. Threw my daughter in a garbage bag. The whole community was upset because she didn’t deserve that. He’s scum.”
