Looking for a last-minute summer jaunt to sunny Spain, but can’t face the throngs of tourists swamping the well-known resorts?
There’s no need to battle for a table in Marbella or scrap for a sun lounger in Benalmádena, when you can book a trip to the charming and quirky town of Mojácar on the Costa de Almeria.
Mojácar, a regular feature on Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun, is home to rustic beach bars, fabulous local cuisine and sea views so spectacular you won’t want to leave.
Maureen Maxwell, 84, from Essex told Express.co.uk that the town is authentically Spanish and is popular among Spaniards looking for a break on the coast.
The retired chef told this website: “Unlike the Costa del Sol it is not commercial, blingy or glitzy.
“It is unlike the Costa Blanca because there are no high rise hotels or apartment blocks. The front line is only occupied by beach bars & restaurants with an uninterrupted view of the Mediterranean.
“If you’re looking for KFC & MacDonalds don’t visit Mojácar because you’ll be disappointed.”
London-based publisher Emma Dodworth, 25, speaking from the town, echoed that view: “Mojácar is the perfect destination for a slow and chilled holiday with beach bars, cafes and high quality restaurants.”
Mojácar’s modest reputation doesn’t just mean you won’t have to wade through holidaymakers. It also means property prices are significantly lower than in rival resorts.
According to Rightmove, properties are on the market in the famous Old Town in the hills for as little as £68,000.
While there are several currently for sale for less than £100,000. If you’re looking for a value-for-money holiday home, you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere in southern Spain that trumps Mojácar.
