At least seven newborn babies died after a horrific blaze broke out at a hospital during the night of May 25.

Five more were left injured as tall flames engulfed the New Born Baby Care hospital in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar, India.

Police officers and firefighters braved the inferno to rescue all 12 babies present at the hospital from the upper floors of the three-storey building.

Breathtaking images show men climbing up ladders and window grille bars to reach the higher areas and get hold of the newborns.

Despite these efforts, not all the children survived, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary said.

In a statement reported by the Hindustan Times, the officer said: “All the 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of other people and shifted to East Delhi Advance NICU Hospital in Vivek Vihar for treatment.

“Meanwhile, fire tenders reached the spot and the fire was controlled. Out of these babies, six were declared brought dead. All seven dead bodies have been further shifted to GTB Hospital for postmortem.”

Terrifying footage shows the fire devouring the whole hospital while firefighters try to extinguish it.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) deployed nine fire trucks to the area to manage the blaze, which spread to other nearby buildings.

The huge flames also caused multiple oxygen cylinders stored inside the hospital to explode.

The cause of the fire, which was eventually quashed, was not immediately clear.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj took to X to comment on the tragedy, stating: “Culprits will not be spared. Strictest punishment will be ensured for those found negligent or involved in any wrong doing.”
