ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (TCD) — Police arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly shooting his stepmother in the neck during her son’s high school graduation ceremony.
On Wednesday, May 8, at approximately 5 p.m., Albuquerque Police Department officers responded to a shooting at the Convention Center and found an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. She was transported to a local hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.
Albuquerque Police said the victim was attending the graduation ceremony and the suspect, Cristian Bencomo, showed up. As she went to hug him, he reportedly shot her. Bystanders restrained him until police arrived. He was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, preventative detention, and two counts of unlawful carrying of a weapon.
The victim’s sister told KRQE-TV that Bencomo allegedly stomped on the victim’s head after she fell down. The victim is reportedly in critical but stable condition.
Her sister added, “I keep thinking that it’s a bad dream that I’ll wake up from.”
